If you’re not happy with your life and find yourself doing things such as: spending too much time on social media listening to gossips, watching countless hours of television, spending money you don’t have on things that won’t appreciate in value, over drinking, eating and smoking; you’re settling and letting such habits prevent you from living the kind of life you truly desire.  The key is to refrain from ineffective and develop good habits from the start but let’s face it; we all have vices and our habits ultimately define who we are.  We must get rid of worthless rituals and create better ones if we want to see changes in our lives.  These are 10 steps you can adopt to shift unproductive habits.

  • Awareness – Be honest with yourself and acknowledge the bad habit.

  • Resolve – Before you begin the fight to end the ritual, make up your mind that you’re done with it.

  • Leverage – Have a personal reason why this habit is costing you.

  • Imagination – See yourself free from the unproductive lifestyle.

  • Source – Know the challenge that you were using the habit to compensate. For example, excessive drinking, eating and smoking may be used to fill a void.

  • Elimination – Fix the problem that’s at the root of the challenge.

  • ReplacementSubstitute the old habit with new positive pleasurable ones.

  • Relationships – Surround yourself with people who engage in the positive behaviors you want to emulate.

  • Thought control – Any thoughts that run contrary to the life you want is the enemy. Don’t feed the bad habit by day dreaming how good it felt.

  • Process – Understand that it’s a process and don’t give up if you slip. In order to break the cycle, you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable in the beginning until you slay the bad habit.
